Over a decade ago I started trying to keep track of the media
I was consuming: movies watched (at the cinema, on television, on video) books (and graphic novels) read through, video games
played to completion. Less in a sense of "I'm watching too much junk"
and more realizing I tend to forget a lot of things I witness, but
can often bring them back to mind with a little nudge.
I set myself up a custom online database for this, with the date, type, name, author (or game system), a general reminder comment of what it was about, and whether I had seen it previously, and if I'd recommend it.
Every year, then, I do a blog post summarizing the previous year. Lately I've tried to inclued additional notes about stuff I'd particularly recommend, though I have a realistic expectation about how many people will be that interested in me as a critic... in a lot of ways these are just notes to my future self.
Here are the previous years:
2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010
And here is a graphical summary of how much of each category I witnessed:
(adding to the geekery, this is a screenshot from a homemade java processing program, not an Excel thing like a sane nerd might've done.)
